So you want to be a vet
“Veterinarian” ranks very high on the list of dream careers for our prospective students. It’s a demanding field, and admission to schools of veterinary medicine is very competitive, so we asked Robert Dailey, Professor and Director of the Davis-Michael Scholars Program, to offer some advice for students aiming towards this challenging profession.
What high-school classes should I take to get ready to study pre-veterinary medicine in college?
Dailey: You should take as many science and mathematics courses as you can. Also, you should take the most challenging classes, including English, that you can. College involves a lot of reading, so you should read as much as possible. Reading improves your vocabulary and keeps you current.
What kinds of clubs or activities will help students get ready for pre-veterinary education?
Dailey: Many clubs will help you in preparing for college. If you are a member of a 4-H club or an FFA chapter, become active in those organizations. In particular clubs that involve projects working with animals are good. You should get experience in a veterinary clinic if possible. Shadowing will help you solidify your decision. Also, you should do service activities that are genuine.
What majors and minors should students think about when they’re applying for college?
Dailey: The major that is best for preparing you for entry into veterinary school should provide a strong background in the sciences and the required courses for the particular veterinary school that you would like to attend. Most biology curricula meet the needs. At West Virginia University, you should major in Animal and Nutritional Sciences, because that program meets all of the needs for entry into veterinary school. Minors are not as important, but if you would plan a minor in a business program, such as the minor in Agribusiness Management in the Davis College, you would take many courses that would be helpful for a career in veterinary medicine.
