As part of commencement activities this spring, the West Virginia University Davis College of Agriculture, Forestry and Consumer Sciences honored graduates of the Davis-Michael Scholars Program.

Established to help prepare students for professional veterinary and medical education, the Scholars Program is funded by an endowment from the late Gladys Gwendolyn Davis and Vivian Davis-Michael. The sisters wished to assure high-quality veterinary care in West Virginia and their gift to the Division of Animal and Nutritional Sciences used to construct a program that would provide premier education for students interested in careers in veterinary medicine.

Students within the program benefit from scholarships and internships, as well as educational seminars and enhanced facilities. Their coursework focuses on biological sciences and chemistry, as well as physics, veterinary sciences and General Education Curriculum classes.Since being established in 1998, the program has awarded almost $2 million in scholarships.

  • Allison C. Echols, Gap Mills, W.Va., BS Agriculture, animal and nutritional sciences
  • Rachel J. Fedyk, Sterling, Ill., BS, animal and nutritional sciences
  • Jeremy D. Hansford, Falling Waters, W.Va., BS, animal and nutritional sciences
  • Kyle J. Kushubar, Harrisburg, Pa., BS, animal and nutritional sciences
  • Hillary A. May, Chester, W.Va., BS, animal and nutritional sciences
  • Gretchen J. McLaughlin, Monaca, Pa., BS, animal and nutritional sciences
  • Lauren M. Mohler, La Plata, Md., BS, animal and nutritional sciences
  • Amy R. Moyers, Burceton Mills, W.Va., BS, animal and nutritional sciences
  • Jessica L. Springman, Williamstown, W.Va., BS, animal and nutritional sciences

Five students who have been accepted into veterinary school and named Davis-Michael Veterinary Scholars will also be honored. These students will receive a one-time scholarship of $5,000 to help offset the cost of their first year in veterinary school:

  • Jamie L. Barnabei, Weirton, W.Va., BS, animal and nutritional sciences. Barnabei will attend the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Levi Cerminara, Weirton, W.Va., BS, animal and nutritional sciences. Cerminara will attend the University of Auburn College of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Edith J. Johnson, Flatwoods, W.Va., BS, animal and nutritional sciences. Johnson will attend the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine.
  • M. Clare Maloy, Charleston, W.Va., BS, animal and nutritional sciences. Maloy will attend the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Brianne L. Williams, Lewisburg, W.Va., BS, animal and nutritional sciences. Williams will attend the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Jennifer M. Wilson, Morgantown, W.Va., BS, animal and nutritional sciences. Wilson will attend Massey University Veterinary School in Palmerston North, New Zealand.

The endowment was created through the WVU Foundation, a private non-profit corporation that generates and provides support for West Virginia University.
