Q&A: Academic Common Market
As a high school senior you may have your heart set on a college major. Unfortunately, none of the public colleges and universities in your state offers it. With the cost of attending college on the rise, paying out-of-state tuition just isn’t feasible for you or your family. Don’t return to the major drawing board just yet. The Southern Regional Education Board Academic Common Market may be your ticket.
Amber Hines, assistant director of student recruitment and retention for the Davis College, is here to help you better understand ACM and what it has to offer.
What is the Academic Common Market?
Academic Common Market is an agreement between sixteen states that allows students to attend colleges and universities for in-state tuition if the program they are interested in is not offered at a public institution in their home state. ACM currently has over 1,400 programs available to certified students.
Which states participate in the program?
Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia participate at the undergraduate level. States that participate at the graduate level include Florida, North Carolina and Texas.
What are the program’s qualifications?
There are several qualifications for students who want to participate in the Academic Common Market program. A student must reside in a member state and be certified by the home state to participate. Likewise, a student must be admitted unconditionally into a partnering institution and program in the ACM inventory. Once in enrolled in an ACM degree program, the student must remain in that program or switch to another one on the ACM list to continue receiving in-state tuition.
