Belize trip set for Spring Break 2009
West Virginia University’s program in Recreation, Parks and Tourism Resources will lead an exciting course over Spring Break 2009 to explore issues of sustainable tourism and development in the Central American country of Belize.
Students can earn three credit hours while spending time visiting national parks and protected areas as well as talking to park managers about local management successes and challenges. Students will trek jungle trails with views of mountain peaks and waterfalls, traverse through one of Central America’s most unique ‘wet’ caves, climb a Mayan temple, and experience the rich Garifuna, Maya, Creole and Mestizo cultures. In addition, near the tropical island Tobacco Caye, students will explore coral reefs, sea grass beds, mangrove environments, and bird sanctuaries.
The trip will run from March 14 to 21, at a cost of approximately $3,150. The group will be limited to twelve students. David Smaldone, Assistant Professor in the Recreation, Parks and Tourism resources program in the Division of Forestry and Natural Resources, will be hosting two information sessions on the trip:
At the Study Abroad fair, on September 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Mountainlair
September 23, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center
In addition to students in majoring in disciplines like recreation, wildlife and forestry programs, Smaldone recommends the trip to majors in programs including sociology, business, geography, and international studies.
