Reymann Field Day set for July 19
West Virginia University?s Reymann Memorial is hosting its annual Field Day on Saturday, July 19, at the WVU farm located along Rt. 259 north of Wardensville, W.Va. The Field Day is open to the public and anyone interested in fish, beef cattle, sheep, field crops, vegetable production, and new technology is encouraged to attend. The Field Day will include wagon tours of research and demonstration plots emphasizing the many projects that are going on at this historical farm.
The theme this year is “Resistance.” The issue of resistance in both plants and animals is a real problem for agricultural producers. Understanding the concepts of Resistance Management will help everyone to better protect and extend the usefulness of those things that are working to control problem pests.
Mark VanGessell, professor of crop science at the University of Delaware will be the keynote speaker. VanGessell is an internationally recognized authority on weed resistance. Herbicides are a cornerstone of weed control in American agriculture.
According to VanGessell, ?The two main issues (about Resistance in plants and animals) are addressing the management of a specific resistant biotype and resistance management to avoid the development of resistant biotypes.?
The evening will also include presentations by WVU faculty who are specialists in the areas of horticultural, weed and animal sciences.
Guests will also view the aquaculture project aquaculture project that is underway at the facility on the farm. Another highlight will be the GrowSafe feeding system, one of the first of its kind in the United States, and hearing about the work being done with feed efficiency data in beef cattle and sheep production production. The horticultural plots this year include demonstrations of Plasticulture with strawberries, heirloom tomatoes and eggplants. Other weed and insect control strategies will be discussed.
