Kenney Recognized as Outstanding Adviser
Students of West Virginia University Davis College of Agriculture, Forestry and Consumer Sciences have named Brett Kenney, professor of animal and nutritional sciences, outstanding adviser for 2007-08.
Sponsored by the Davis College Student Council, nominations for the award are sought from the student body each spring. The Council then narrows the field to five nominees and has the Davis College students vote by ballot for their top choice.
A member of the college?s faculty since 1993, Kenney teaches ?Meat Technology? and ?Growth and Lactation Physiology,? and his research interests have focused on protein functionality in muscle foods, pre-harvest microbiology with an emphasis on Salmonella and Campylobacter ecology in turkeys, and postmortem metabolism effects on muscle food quality. His most recent research has been focused on the quality and processing of rainbow trout fillets. He previously received both the college service and research awards in 1998 and 2001, respectively.
Allison Echols, senior animal and nutritional sciences major and Student Council president, said students described Kenney as caring, compassionate person who makes students his top priority.
?Dr. Kenney is genuinely interested in the success of those he instructs and advises,? she said. ?He not only goes out of his way for the students but the faculty as well. When talking to a few instructors here, they mentioned his willingness to help organize events or meetings.?
Kenney was recognized at the Davis College Honors Convocation and received a wooden replica of the Mountaineer statue. He has indicated that this recognition is more meaningful to him than any previous professional accomplishment because it was awarded by the students.
