Spring Horticulture Show April 26
Flowers will be in full bloom this Saturday, April 26, as the West Virginia University Plant and Soil Sciences Club hosts their annual Spring Horticulture Show.
The free event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the WVU Greenhouse on the Evansdale Campus. The day also marks the beginning of the Greenhouse?s Spring Plant Sale.
One of the main attractions will be a flower mural.
?From a distance the mural will resemble a butterfly, but as you walk closer individual flowers will begin to stand out,? explained Karen McDaniel, junior horticulture major and club secretary from Standardsville, Va.
The mural will be the last stop on a visitor?s journey through different growing ?climates.?
?We?re transforming the main hallway to showcase a flowing desert-to-rainforest theme and the plants that thrive there,? she said.
Other exhibits and activities for the day include:
- Flower arranging
- Soil painting
- Insect origami
- Floral and Bonsai displays
- Monongalia County Beekeepers Association honeybee hive exhibit
- Monongalia County Master Gardeners display
William Bryan, professor of agronomy, will conduct a sheep sheering demonstration at 10:30 a.m., and an exhibition by the WVU Woodsmen Team will be held at 2 p.m.
Many of the plants and flowers on display will also be available for purchase. Prices start at $15 for hanging baskets and planters will range from $20-$70.
?People will be able to see and purchase a lot of plants they don?t come across on a regular basis,? McDaniel said. ?Hopefully they?ll also walk away having learned more about horticulture here at WVU.?
