ANPR 344 – Light Horse Science. 3 hr. TR 8:00-9:15 AM. Application of sound scientific principles and concepts in areas of equine science including genetics, breeding, nutrition, reproduction, and anatomy to efficient production and management of horses. Suggested prerequisite: A&VS 281. Instructor: Spooner.
ANPR 338 – Horse Evaluation. 3 hr. TR 2-3:30 PM.
Basic principles of judging horses in halter and performance events. Introduction to the preparation and presentation of oral justifications (reasons). Participation in this course is required to participate on the WVU Horse Judging Team. Students who choose to participate on the team will travel to a national judging contest and will be eligible to take the advanced judging course to participate in additional contests in the fall. A&VS 343 – Equine Hoof and Limb. 3 hr. T 6:00-8:50 PM.
In depth study of the hoof and lower leg of the horse, including anatomy and physiology, common ailment and injuries, and discussion of shoeing and trimming techniques and practices. Instructor: Carper.
RESM 330 – Equine Facility Development/Mgmt. 3 hr. TR 12:30-1:45 PM. Overview of design, planning, and building of safe, functional equine facilities. Business, legal, environmental and other issues involved with running an equine facility including contracts, budgeting, staffing, and marketing. Suggested prerequisite: A&VS 281. Instructor: Harman.
AFCS 293H – Advanced Techniques of Therapeutic Horsemanship, 3 hr. Mondays, 5 – 8 PM. The objective of this course is for students to expand their knowledge of therapeutic horsemanship, which is the use of horses in helping people with disabilities improve their lives both physically and emotionally. Professional criteria needed for becoming a North American Riding for the Handicapped (NARHA) therapeutic riding specialist will be emphasized. Suggested prerequisite is AFCS 293F, but open to anyone with a strong interest in becoming a professional in this field. Instructor: Petitto.
